Talent Search

Talent Search is an informational outreach program designed to help middle and high school students, grades 6-12, complete high school and attend the college of their choice.  Informational workshops are presented to program participants at area middle and high schools during the school day at no cost to program participants.  Age groups (11 to 27 years of age and all veterans) from low-income families who have academic potential, but who lack adequate secondary school preparation needed to enter programs of post-secondary education, participate in a preparatory enrichment program that enhances college entrance.  Individual and group counseling as well as technical assistance are provided.  Tutorial services are offered to middle school participants.
Program participants must meet the eligibility requirements established by the U.S. Department of Education.  Two-thirds of participants must be low-income and neither parent may possess a four-year college degree.  Applications for the program are accepted throughout the academic year.  The program’s goals are to generate skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school.  The educational goals of the program are met through an academic year and summer component.  During the year, participants receive the following:

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Technical assistance (completing admission forms and applications)
  • Tutorial services and/or academic enrichment (6th – 8th graders)
  • Self-development workshops relating to self-esteem, study and survival skills, and college prep
  • Cultural enrichment activities and trips
  • College orientation and campus tours
  • Parenting and College Expectation workshops
  • Financial planning
  • Technology Skill Development
