SUSLA Student Scholarship Drive Raises Over $45,000
Shreveport, LA - With the support of friends, community partners, faculty, staff, students and alumni members, SUSLA raised over $45,000 to support student scholarships. This year's campaign has been the most ambitious and successful in recent years. SUSLA launched its first annual Jaguar Scholarship Fundraising Month on October 7, 2009-November 7, 2009.
“This month represents an opportunity for our constituents, supporters and friends to really embrace those students to whom this institution serves. Their financial gifts and donations will provide the opportunity for many of our students to realize dreams and secure futures,” says Chancellor Ray L. Belton.
LaKesha Mosley, Public Relations Coordinator, gave leadership and organization to the fundraising events. Along with the help and assistance of many University staff, both events were seen as successful.
“This month was a tremendously successful event thanks to the entire SUSLA family and supporters who answered the call of the University to help meet this need. Investing in a student’s educational experience is truly a selfless act of generosity,” Theron Jackson, Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Institutional Advancement.
At the first event, The Scholarship Bail-Out, University administration, participating faculty, staff and students were given “Bail” amounts to raise, in exchange for their release from the “SUSLA Jailhouse” which was located in the newly built Johnny L. Vance Student Activity Center. Refreshments and musical entertainment was provided while the “Detainees” made phone calls to raise their “bond” amounts that go to support student scholarships.
The second and final event was the Jaguar Scholarship Radiothon which was held this past Saturday, November 7, 2009. Over 40 volunteers manned the phone bank and taking listener pledges and worked at the Alumni location, a new feature of the fundraiser, hosted by Micro Accounting Services and Southern University Shreveport Foundation, collecting checks and pledges. Another new feature to the fundraiser is the street team. Volunteers collected even more donations at the intersection of Jewella Avenue and Greenwood Road. The Radiothon was broadcasted from The Radio Group corporate office and studios on three of their stations: KDKS 102.1FM, KKBT 103.7FM and KOKA 980 the Light from 7am until 7pm. Community supporters flooded all three locations with money, time, words of encouragement and well wishes.
