Electrical Line Worker Instructor

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Electrical Line Worker Instructor position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System.  The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.



The Electrical Line Worker (ELW) Instructor is responsible for teaching classroom theory, procedures and the hands-on application portions of electrical line worker curriculum. The ELW instructor will teach in multiple environments including in person or virtual classroom, indoor and outside lab settings. This position will be responsible for evaluating student knowledge and progress on skill attainment in addition to evaluating instruction/learning by means of written, oral practical and performance assessments. Incumbent is required to assist with the development and support of recruitment activities, apprenticeship programs, and employer partnerships. ELW Instructor will deliver high quality training and prepares students for jobs in the energy industry, and ensure curriculum is current with industry standards. The ELW Instructor is expected to assist the University/Division in achieving its vision and mission; focus on customer service, accountability, integrity and have willingness to assist as needed. 



  • Organizes instruction in classrooms, shops and laboratories as evidenced by course outline, lesson plans, competency test, and instructional materials such as textbooks, instruction sheets. and audiovisual.
  • Provides sufficient practice with equipment in order to develop skill proficiency.
  • Use and maintain tools, materials, and equipment in a secure, safe, clean, and orderly manner; maintaining an accurate inventory of all tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain discipline and order during instructional activities in accordance with departmental and institutional policies; suspending unsafe operations as necessary.
  • Maintain certification, continue professional development, and remain current with industry needs to assure graduate outcomes that meet the work place expectations.
  • Promote the education/training program, participate in efforts to recruit and retain students, and participate in efforts to market SUSLA.
  • Participate in advisory board meetings, departmental meetings and institutional activities.
  • Be available to students via email, phone, and or personal conferences. The method of contact and hours of availability should be clearly communicated to supervisors and to students through the course syllabus.
  • Provide counsel/guidance to students when there is a need.
  • Maintains and submits accurate student grades, attendance and other student accounting records in accordance with institutional policies and established deadlines.
  • Fulfilling professional assignments in accordance with the college calendar and contractual obligations.
  • Partner with Business and Industry to promote Power Lineman program.



  • Successful completion of a postsecondary vocational/technical program directly related to construction/electrical.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the electrical field.
  • Journeyman electrician license and three (3) years’ experience or Master Electrician status.
  • Safety skills and the ability to use and maintain industry-related hand and power tools.
  • Ability to effectively train others in a classroom or field environment.
  • Must complete training to obtain NCCER instructor certification within specified time.
  • Must possess CDL or able to acquire one within specified time.



  • Knowledge of applicable regulations applying to electrical linework such as OSHA and the ability to research current/new regulations.
  • Knowledge to NCCER curricula and standards
  • Ability to climb wood and steel structures up to 95 feet in height.
  • Must be able to relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social and educational backgrounds.
  • Five years of experience as a Power Lineman Technician
  • Experience in higher education/academic setting


Salary Range is $60,000- $65,000
