SUMMARY
Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Museum Coordinator position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana. It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with the opening and closing of exhibit areas and check the collections for agents of deterioration
- Prepare and maintain exhibit supplies including assistance with developing and designing temporary exhibitions
- Ensure that artifacts being set up or taken down after an exhibit are inventoried and condition reports are completed
- Assist with the care and safeguarding of the museum's collections
- Coordinate outreach activities including Community organizations, groups, churches, schools, Southern University System, faculty, staff, and State organizations
- Provide an orientation to the facility that includes information on all museum programs and services
- Assisting with the training and development of student workers, docents, hosts/hostesses, volunteers and receptionist
- Assist with promoting collaborative efforts with Southern University System faculty and staff
- Works directly with the Executive Director and Executive Associate to the Chancellor in all aspects of the operations of SUMAS and the documentation of the museums' collections
- Assures that the daily public operations of SUMAS are conducted in a professional and welcoming manner that provides an environment conducive to learning for museum guests
- Implement outreach activities and assist with the development of long range, substantive plans for the museum's future growth
- Collects demographic data on visitors and outreach program activities including schools, organizations, groups, and class projects
- Assist with the cataloging of artifacts based on professional standards and museum protocol
- Prepare, coordinate and maintain purchases, travel and schedules
- Monthly projects include Demographic updates; Annual projects include Annual reports and inventory
- Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, art history, education, history, anthropology, or related discipline required; Master’s degree preferred
- Three to five years of experience in a museum or educational setting
- Two years of supervisory experience preferred salary range: $40,000 - $45,000
- This is a full-time position.
