SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Personal and Career Counselor position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System.  The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Personal and Career Counselor will provide personal and career programming to Jaguar Scholars participants in individual and group sessions. Additional responsibilities include conducting an initial assessment to identify and create a strategy to address the personal developmental, social, and academic strengths and challenges of each student and conduct student needs and program assessments, design and lead workshops and seminars. Must maintain a minimum caseload and provide the required documentation in files. Participate in outreach, recruitment and orientation activities.  The Personal and Career Counselor is expected to assist the University/Division in achieving its vision and mission; focus on customer service, accountability, integrity and have a willingness to assist as needed. 

PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES: 

  • Identify personal and academic strengths and challenges that must be considered and/or addressed during career and employment counseling and planning necessary to create a comprehensive Individual Development Plan.
  • Develop, document, implement, and monitor the intervention strategies that were specifically designed to address each student’s personal developmental, social and academic challenges.
  • Advising and recommending the most appropriate technical training career pathway after assessing numerous factors, including employment prospects in various trades/fields/areas, and the student’s interests and aptitude/skill level, in collaboration with career and employment counselors.
  • Be familiar with institutional academic policies, technical program entrance and progression policies, student rights, and academic support services.
  • Monitor class schedules including, but not limited to, grades, attendance, projects, materials, mentoring, and arranging tutoring.
  • Be familiar with industry-based credentialing criteria and labor market information.
  • Develop relationships between the student, faculty, and student services.
  • Assessing transitional support needs, developing strategies to meet those needs, and working with employment counselors.
  • Participate in planning and carrying out the SUSLA new student orientation in Fall, Spring, and Summer.
  • Research and suggest best practices.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work. Overnight travel may be required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree (including 15 semester hours of instruction in social services-related instruction), and one-year experience in counseling or related field, preferably working with youth and young adults. Requires a high level of organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Prior experience working with 16 to 24-year-olds and/or at-risk populations.
  2. Experience in higher education/academic setting

Compensation:

Salary Range is 34,000-38,000 annually.  (This is a full-time position)
