SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Educational Advocate TRIO Upward Bound Desoto-Red River position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System.  The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Director of TRiO Upward Bound DeSoto-Red River, the Educational Advocate serves as a secondary advisor to high school participants enrolled in the Upward Bound program. With responsibility for providing participants with general advising assistance for secondary completion and postsecondary enrollment, the Educational Advocate is responsible for: facilitating career and college information workshops; monitoring and supporting participant academic performance; and assisting in planning, organizing, and presenting group workshops. The Educational Advocate will also work to provide opportunities for Upward Bound participants to develop social skills, cultural competence, study skills, and academic skills appropriate for their educational goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Support:

  • Assists with the development of educational and cultural enrichment activities and workshops
  • Assists the Project Director in preparing quarterly reports on each student, describing advisement activities for the reporting period and providing specific details regarding participant progress such as course schedule, grades, problems, and related matters
  • Coordinate with secondary partners and implement recruitment activities to support enrollment of eligible participants
  • Maintains close liaison with students, their families, and high school staff
  • Collaborate and create on-going partnerships with faculty, staff, and community activists to identify, define and meet educational and social planning needs, goals and objectives of participants
  • Assess programs and services, evaluates data and makes changes as required to improve participant outcomes
  • Interpret policies and procedures under Education General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for program and budget compliance
  • Provide an overall technology model that will stimulate the advancement of technology systems and programming for daily operations, workshop innovations, and academic advancement
  • Monitors UB TRIO email

Student Support and Development:

  • Works cohesively with target schools to deliver precollege services that meet critical academic needs of participants
  • Provides motivation support and accountability support to students based on student's individual goals and academic performance
  • Demonstrates an appropriate level of professional judgment and discretion to effectively deliver services to participants and their parents or guardians
  • Monitors a tutoring program designed to supplement high school courses, with the responsibility to determine participant needs, schedule tutoring sessions and monitor participant progress
  • Manages a cohort of students which includes developing individual academic, financial and college plans
  • Advises Upward Bound participants regarding realistic college choices and assists them in gaining admission into college and obtaining financial aid or other needed services
  • Provide academic advisement, career readiness resources and guidance activities, educational/degree planning, course selection, and related support services for the programs offered by Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA)

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Education, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree in Education, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • 1-3 years of experience in serving underrepresented populations, first-generation students, in secondary education, higher education programs related to first-year student development, academic initiatives, and or related experiences
  • Knowledge of college systems and processes including admissions, financial aid, academic and career advising
  • Capacity to assess academic and non-academic student needs to develop coherent, realistic service plans
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate with supervisor and peers, school administrators, families and students in sometimes stressful situations.

Compensation:

$35,000-$37,000
