Degree Type: Associate Degree
A sound background in the life sciences is essential for success in employment and for graduate studies in biological science as well as careers in the health care arena. Many careers require fundamental and detailed understanding and knowledge of animal and plant structure and function.
The Department of Biology offers two academic programs – the Associate of General Studies and the Associate of Science in Biology. The Associate of General Studies in Biology parallels the first two years toward the Bachelor of Science in Biology that would prepare students for admission to schools of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, and pharmacy as well as graduate studies. The Associate of Science in Biology Program is designed for students seeking immediate professional careers in biology and its related fields.
A student may officially enroll in the Degree program when he/she has completed all admission requirements prescribed by the institution.
The Department offers service courses in biology as a part of the institutional core curricular requirements as elective courses for non-majors and as basic science requirements in the Allied Health and Nursing programs. Biology majors are required to complete a comprehensive departmental exit examination prior to transferring or receiving the associate degree.
