A Legacy of Empowerment: Four Generations Celebrate Scholarship Success at SUSLA During Women's History Month
In a moment that beautifully encapsulated the spirit of Women's History Month, Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, Southern University at Shreveport Chancellor, recently had the distinct honor of celebrating Ms. Tazzmin Durrah, the Spring 2026 recipient of the $1,000 Norma J. Blake Scholarship presented by the Southern University Shreveport Foundation. This scholarship was created by Mrs. Monica Blake Mickles, the daughter of the late Mrs. Norma J. Blake, to honor her mother's deep love for the nursing field. Ms. Durrah, a distinguished Radiologic Technology clinical student, was recognized for her academic excellence and unwavering dedication.

The check presentation ceremony was particularly poignant, as it wasn't just Ms. Durrah celebrating her achievement. The room was filled with an outpouring of family pride, represented by four generations of women who gathered to witness this significant milestone. Ms. Durrah's mother, her grandmother, and her two young daughters looked on with beaming faces, capturing every moment with photos and videos as she accepted the $1,000 scholarship—a tangible investment in her continued education and future career.
This powerful scene underscored the very essence of Women's History Month – a celebration of the strides women have made, the resilience they embody, and the legacy of inspiration they pass down through generations. Ms. Durrah not only represents the bright future of healthcare but also serves as a living example for her daughters. Demonstrating that dedication, hard work, and the pursuit of knowledge can lead to profound success. Her commitment to her studies, while undoubtedly balancing family responsibilities, highlights the strength and multifaceted capabilities of women.

Southern University at Shreveport extends its deepest congratulations to Ms. Tazzmin Durrah. Her academic excellence, leadership qualities, and her role as an exceptional role model for her daughters are truly commendable. As we reflect on the contributions of women throughout history, Ms. Durrah's story is a vivid reminder that the power of education, coupled with unwavering support, continues to empower women to shape their futures and inspire generations to come.
