Center For Student Success (CSS)

Mission

At the heart of the Center for Student Success are two core beliefs:

  1. Every student can thrive at SUSLA.
  2. There are as many definitions of student success as there are Jaguars.

The Center for Student Success partners with students as they transition to and progress through college, using a high-quality, holistic, and individualized approach. Our success coaches connect students to essential resources, including academic advising, tutoring, career counseling, and student activities, while collaborating with campus partners to meet the diverse needs of students, both now and in the future.

We foster an environment where students feel empowered to ask for help, learn from their mistakes, and create actionable plans to stay on track. A central component of the first-year experience (FYE) is our comprehensive advisement program, which combines career coaching with academic advising to provide an intrusive approach that effectively supports the needs of incoming freshmen.

Our support takes different forms, tailored to the individual student and includes things like:

  • Discussing time management tools & referrals to tutoring
  • Sharing tips on how to navigate the course registration system
  • Celebrating students’ accomplishments or milestones
  • Responding to faculty concerns about a student's progress
  • Helping students connect with campus resources to enhance their academic journey

Our work involves identifying and removing barriers that hinder student success and helping students navigate a constellation of supports to experience SUSLA as a place where they can thrive.

The Center for Student Success also strives to assess the effectiveness of our programs and services, continuously exploring ways to enhance and sustain their impact through institutional initiatives. By doing so, we work to improve student experiences, close performance gaps, and contribute to student-centered success at SUSLA.
