SUSLA Represents at HBCU Day 2026

Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, Southern University at Shreveport Chancellor, and representatives from SUSLA joined leaders from across Louisiana for HBCU Day at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. The celebration of the vital roles Historically Black Colleges and Universities play in shaping the state's educational landscape and workforce development was on full display. The event brought together policymakers, educators, and students to highlight the unique contributions of Louisiana's HBCUs. This gathering provided an opportunity to showcase the value of HBCUs in fostering opportunity and innovation.

SUSLA's Respiratory Therapy program was featured at the event with an informational booth focused on the program, demonstrating how SUSLA prepares students for high-demand careers while meeting regional workforce needs. Our respiratory therapy students, along with program director Contika Shyne, demonstrated tracheal intubation. Leadership from SUSLA's Student Government Association, specifically SGA President Kyndryck Green and Vice President Ja’Varius Cooper, connected with peers and faculty from other HBCUs, exchanging ideas and learning about new initiatives aimed at enhancing campus life and improving the overall student experience. The day served as a powerful reminder of the collective impact of Louisiana's HBCUs and their ongoing partnership with state leaders to expand educational access and economic opportunity.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Kim Hunter Reed, Commissioner of Higher Education, and her incredible team at Louisiana Board of Regents for hosting HBCU Day at the Capitol! Your commitment to uplifting Historically Black Colleges and Universities is truly inspiring. Together, we're strengthening educational opportunities and creating a brighter future for our students!
