Honoring Legacy: SUSLA History Department Hosts Powerful Black History Commemoration
Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) deepened its Black History Month observances with a profoundly impactful Commemoration event hosted by the History Department. The gathering provided a stark and vital historical perspective.
Guest lecturer Mr. Stanley Ray Stevenson, owner of Big Mama’s Antiques, presented a compelling display of segregation era artifacts, including signage from the Confederate Memorial Hospital now known as Ochsner LSU Health. Mr. Stevenson's powerful presentation underscored the critical importance of preserving this history and its enduring relevance today. SUSLA History Instructor Mr. Sherman Houston further enriched the program by providing historical context to the artifacts and discussing the broader lessons of Black History Month.
The event's resounding success was made possible by the dedicated efforts of the program committee, including Dr. Anjelica Hart, Dean Fred Moss, Mrs. Henrietta Wildsmith, Interim Vice Chancellor Joann W. Brown, Mrs. Linzola Winzer, and Mr. Zummie Law. This powerful commemoration reinforced SUSLA's commitment to fostering a deep understanding of African American history and its legacy.
