Kylie Mitchell Receives Beverly Wallace Scholarship at SUSLA Health Information Technology Alumni Reception
Congratulations to Kylie Mitchell, the 2026 recipient of the $1,000 Beverly Wallace Scholarship!
Southern University at Shreveport’s Health Information Technology (H.I.T.) program honored her at its annual alumni reception, where the Beverly Wallace Scholarship is presented. This year’s award was presented by Lakendria Combs, the 2024 recipient, to Kylie Mitchell, who received a $1,000 scholarship. Mitchell reflected on her journey: “I’m honored to receive this scholarship. If you told me in 2014, as a 20‑year‑old, that I would be receiving it, I wouldn’t have believed it. I also wouldn’t have believed I’d be this close to obtaining my degree, which motivated me to return to school. Up until February of this year, I’ve been able to go to school, work a 9‑to‑5, pursue my hobbies, and still be a great mom.”
After graduating from SUSLA, Mitchell plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management Systems at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO).
The Beverly Wallace Scholarship honors the legacy of Ms. Beverly Wallace, a beloved H.I.T. instructor whose dedication and leadership left a lasting impact on students and colleagues. Faculty, staff, students, HIT alumni, members of Wallace’s family, and representatives from New Hope Missionary Baptist Church gathered to celebrate her contributions.
The reception, hosted by LaChandra Wells (H.I.T. Program/Medical Coding Specialist) and Venus Ammons (Professional Practice Experience Coordinator/Instructor), highlighted SUSLA’s commitment to honoring its pioneers and supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals. Events like this exemplify SUSLA’s mission to empower students to achieve their educational and career goals.
