Program Overview

Type: Associate of Science

The Associate of Science in Human Services prepares students for entry-level careers in the helping professions through two options: Health and Human Services and Substance Abuse Counseling.

The Human Services associate degree is designed for completion in four semesters and requires 64 semester credit hours, including general education, core Human Services courses, option-specific coursework, a Human Services Seminar, and free electives.

Option 1: Health and Human Services

The Health and Human Services option prepares students to work as paraprofessionals assisting individuals and communities in achieving enhanced well-being. Students develop foundational helping skills in communication, client intake and assessment, group facilitation, networking, conflict resolution, and client advocacy.

Graduates may pursue employment in settings such as group homes, community mental health centers, correctional facilities, family and youth agencies, rehabilitation and residential centers, healthcare facilities, and government and community agencies, with opportunities to work in areas including social work, psychology, family services, mental health, child care, and welfare.

Option 1: Substance Abuse Counseling

The Substance Abuse Counseling option provides practical preparation for working with individuals experiencing substance use and related problems. Students develop skills in assessment, counseling, intervention, treatment planning, and clinical concepts related to chemical dependency, while gaining an understanding of substance use and its effects on diverse populations.

Graduates may work in substance abuse rehabilitation centers, residential and healthcare facilities, social and governmental institutions, and community agencies, or continue their education in counseling, social work, sociology, psychology, Human Services, or related fields.

Articulation

In addition, the program has an articulation agreement with Northwestern State University which affords complete the Substance Abuse Program through its Psychology Department.
