Microsoft Windows XP Setup
The purpose of this document is to explain in detail the steps taken to connect a personal pc to Southern University at Shreveport’s wireless network using the SSID “SU-wNET”.

Note: Windows XP Machines are typically tougher to authenticate to the wireless network. This is due in part to the fact that this software was developed before the specifications were created.
To ensure the smoothest access, we recommend that you:
- have Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later
- have the latest Windows updates
- have the latest drivers for wireless (See your computer manufacturer's website)
- have a wireless card that is WPA compatible
- Install the required hotfix linked below in Step 1
Step 1:Make sure your computer has:
- Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed properly
- Windows XP update KB885453 installed properly
Wireless authentication will not work if these two (2) operating system updates are not installed properly.
Step 2:Right click on your wireless adapter icon in the task tray and select View Available Wireless Networks.
Step 3:Choose the SU-wNET network and click the “Change advanced settings” button.
Step 4:Make sure the check-box labeled “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings” is checked. Next, select SU-wNET and click the button labeled “Properties”.
Step 5:Set the Network Authentication option to WPA (or WPA-Enterprise if available), then set the encryption type in the Data encryption drop-menu to TKIP.
Step 6:Set the EAP type drop-menu to Protected EAP (PEAP).
Step 7:Make sure the check-box labeled “Validate server certificate” is unchecked.
Change the option in Select Authentication Method to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
Click the button labeled “Configure…” to configure authentication settings.
Step 8:Make sure the check-box labeled “Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).” is unchecked.
Step 9:Enter your network username and password. Enter “SUSLA” in the Logon domain textbox (without the quotes).
Example:
Student Usernames are your first initial, the first nine characters of your last name without special characters (\ , - ") , and the last four digits of your Banner ID located on your student schedule, your fee sheet and on the back of your Student ID card.
For example: your Banner ID is 900099999 and your first name initial is J.
If your last name is Smith, your user ID will be jsmith9999.
If your last name is Smith-Alex, your ID will be jsmith9999.
If your last name is Washington, your ID will be jwashingto9999. (First 9 characters, since the last name is larger than 9 characters)
Your initial password is your 6 digit date of birth - no dashes or spaces. For example, if your DOB is March 30, 1990 then your password will be 033090. (NOTE: If your password is alphanumeric and lowercase doesn't work, try uppercase. Passwords are case sensitive.)
Step 10:If all these settings are configured correctly, you should see an animated network icon in your system tray.
