Rodney Broughton

Athletic Director & Head Men’s Basketball Coach

About the Athletic Director

Rodney Broughton comes to Southern University at Shreveport as the Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach, bringing over a decade of experience in collegiate coaching, recruiting, and athletic program development.

Most recently, Broughton served as the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Alabama A&M University, working under Head Coach Otis Hughley. During his time with the Bulldogs, the program made three consecutive SWAC Tournament appearances, including two semifinal finishes. In the 2023–2024 season, Alabama A&M earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), where the Bulldogs captured their first-ever Division I postseason tournament win outside of the conference tournament.

Broughton was instrumental in the creation and execution of the Bulldog Bash, the first HBCU-hosted Multi-Team Event (MTE), which featured Coastal Carolina, South Carolina State, and the University of Indianapolis (UIndy), further showcasing HBCU basketball on a national platform.

As Recruiting Coordinator, he built a wide-reaching recruiting network that extended internationally, bringing in student-athletes from around the world. His responsibilities also included planning team travel, managing academic oversight, scouts, organizing elite and team camps, and leading community service initiatives.

Prior to his time at Alabama A&M, Broughton spent five seasons (2017–2022) as an assistant coach at Meridian Community College, working under Head Coach James Green. At Meridian, he helped turn around a program that had won just three games the year before his arrival, guiding the Eagles to a 22-win season—their best since 1999—including multiple victories over opponents. In the 2021–2022 season, Meridian reached the Region 23 Championship game. During his tenure, five players earned All-MACCC honors and numerous athletes advanced to four-year colleges and universities.

Broughton also served as a graduate assistant and video coordinator at Northwestern State University from 2015 to 2017, working under longtime head coach Mike McConathy. He was involved in scouting, film breakdown, player development, and day-to-day operations, contributing to the overall growth of the Demons' program. During that time, he earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Northwestern State.

Before Northwestern State, Broughton spent the 2014–2015 season at the University of Mobile, working under Head Coach Joe Niland. He helped guide the Rams to national recognition in multiple defensive categories. The team held opponents to just 62 points per game and ranked in the top 10 nationally in several defensive metrics. At Mobile, Broughton worked with both the varsity and junior

varsity teams, while also assisting with recruiting, academic supervision, team camps, and Alumni Day events.

Earlier in his career, Broughton began coaching at Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes, Alabama, serving as the head coach of the freshman team and as a varsity assistant.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Broughton earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of South Alabama and holds a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Northwestern State University.

With a deep commitment to excellence in both athletic performance and student development, Rodney Broughton is prepared to lead Southern University at Shreveport into a new era of success on and off the court.
