Biography:

Kim Newlen, MA, RHIA has served in the Health Information Management profession for thirty-nine (39) years.  The first eighteen (18) years of her career path included serving as the Director of HIM in a variety of diverse healthcare entities: acute care, behavioral healthcare, long-term acute care, rehabilitation, and as a consultant.  Over the past twenty-one (21) years, Kim has served in the capacity of Program Director and Associate Professor for the Health Information Technology / Medical Coding Specialist Program at Southern University at Shreveport.  Ms. Newlen’s teaching philosophy mirrors her life philosophy, “your destiny is not a matter of chance but rather choice….so choose to make a difference”.  One of her favorite quotes is “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education”.  (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
